Steve and I have been doing a lot of interviews in Canada this week. We've done more than a hundred since the book came out last November, but today one radio host asked me a question I hadn't heard before: "What was it like to spend all that time talking with Steve, asking question after question?"
Now, interviewers have asked me lots of things, like why I wanted to do the book, why it took 3-1/2 years of interviews and what I learned from the process of compiling and editing the book. But never "What was it like talking to Steve?"
Here's what it was like.
It was like sitting down somewhere cozy and welcoming with someone who makes you feel smarter. It was like finding out that there are several extra rooms in your house that you didn't even know about. It was like being an artist and having someone give you 32 new paint colors that you never knew existed. Steve always expanded my perceptions.
After recording sessions I'd drive the two hours home listening to the playback, still deep in thought. When I was transcribing the sessions many new questions would bubble up and I could hardly wait for another fun ride on the coattails of Steve's mind.
What was it like?
It was like jumping on a roller coaster that goes higher and faster than you'd ever thought possible, but you're not scared.
If you get a chance to read the book, let us know your thoughts by sending a note to reviews@wereallinthistogether.ca. And remember, a lot of Steve's thoughts are sleepers. You might find yourself pausing to chew on whatever he just said because it's got more layers than one of Red Green's duct tape repairs.
